Decision Making Under Pressure: Why Slowing Down Leads to Better Results

May 06, 20264 min read

There was a time when I believed the best decisions were made quickly.

Act fast. Trust your gut. Don’t hesitate.

And in some situations, that absolutely works.

But over the years—through working with elite athletes, business leaders, and global organisations like Ingram Micro and Hewlett Packard—I’ve come to see something very different:

Pressure doesn’t just test our ability to make decisions. It reveals who we are when we’re making them.

If you're leading teams in high-pressure environments and want to develop this capability at scale, you can explore how this approach is applied in organisations here:

The Hidden Cost of Constant Urgency

In high-performance environments—whether in the boardroom, on the sales floor, or within leadership teams navigating constant change—there’s an unspoken expectation:

Move fast. Respond immediately. Stay ahead.

But here’s what I’ve consistently observed:

The more urgency people feel, the further they move away from clarity.

When pressure builds:

  • Thinking speeds up

  • The body tightens

  • Focus narrows

And instead of making better decisions, people often:

  • Overthink simple issues

  • Hesitate at key moments

  • React from fear rather than intention

This isn’t a capability problem.

It’s a state problem.

Why State Matters More Than Skill

One of the biggest insights from my work with corporate teams is this:

Decision making under pressure has less to do with intelligence or experience—and far more to do with your internal state.

When you’re overwhelmed, rushed, or tense, you simply don’t have access to your best thinking.

Yet many professionals fall into the same trap:

The illusion that everything needs an immediate answer.

Urgencyfeelsreal—but often, it isn’t.

And when we rush, we lose the one thing we need most:

Clarity.

The Power of the Pause

What I’ve been sharing with organisations is simple—but incredibly powerful:

The quality of your decisions is directly linked to your ability to pause.

This isn’t about delaying or avoiding action.

It’s about creating just enough space to think clearly.

This is where the concept of STOP 2 THINK comes in—not as a technique, but as a way of operating.

When people give themselves permission to pause:

  • The noise settles

  • The body softens

  • Thinking becomes clearer

I’ve seen it happen in real time:

  • Leaders break free from reactive loops

  • Teams move from over-analysis to decisive action

  • Individuals realise they don’t need more pressure—they need more space

The Moment Most People Miss

There is always a moment—however small—between what happens to you and what you do next.

Most people miss it.

They move straight from stimulus to reaction.

But in that space lies your power.

When you learn to recognise that moment, you gain a choice:

  • React based on fear

  • Or respond based on intention

And that single shift changes everything.

Rethinking Pressure

Under pressure, people often move away from their natural instincts.

They become:

  • More cautious

  • More self-critical

  • More tense

I’ve seen it in elite athletes—and I see the exact same patterns in corporate environments.

Different context. Same human experience.

So the real question isn’t:

How do we eliminate pressure?

That’s unrealistic.

The question is:

How do we change our relationship with it?

A Simple Practice for Better Decisions

Here’s a practical approach you can start using immediately:

  1. Notice the pressure
Don’t ignore it or fight it—just acknowledge that it is there.

  2. Pause (even for one breath)
    Create a moment of space.

  3. Check your state
Are you tight, rushed, distracted—or present and grounded?

  4. Refocus on what matters
Strip away the noise and return to what’s important.

  5. Decide from clarity
    Act from intention, not reaction.

Final Thought: The Real Skill Behind Great Decisions

You are more than the experience you’re having.

Pressure can:

  • Make things feel bigger than they are

  • Make you feel smaller than you are

But neither is true.

When you step back—even slightly—you reconnect with something deeper.

And from there, your decisions begin to change.

Decision making under pressure isn’t about becoming someone new.
It’s about accessing who you truly are—when it matters most.

And that doesn’t start in the moment of pressure.

It starts long before:

  • In how you live

  • How you think

  • And how often you allow yourself to stop

Because in a world that constantly tells you to go faster…

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is pause.
