Are You at Your Breaking Point? Do This Now!

Do you feel like you are about to give up or even explode? You might be at your breaking point. Failure to surpass your threshold can result in your downfall, so it is best to read this before you snap and regret your actions.

Cambridge dictionary defines breaking point as the stage at which you lose control over yourself or a situation. It is the time when you can no longer deal with your problems and have a meltdown.

It is a moment of great stress that forces you to cope. It can be a series of highly physical or emotional situations that have accumulated over time into an insurmountable adversity.

Everyone experiences a breaking point and has their own way of managing it. Some react to it positively and have built the resilience within themselves to overcome such situations. However, others prefer to hide or avoid the situation or even burst in anger.

Conditions like loss of job, serious medical condition, loss of loved one, not letting go of the past, ignoring problems, rage, bitterness, hopelessness, frustrations can all lead you to a meltdown.

Giving in to breaking points can make life more miserable. It can further worsen a person’s mental and physical health. It can result to depression, frustration, more debilitating disease or even suicide.

People often view breaking points as something negative although this should not be the case. Breaking points are mere turning points of our lives. These signify that there are things we need to change and improve on.

Circumstances that make us snap are our growth points. These are the instances that mean we need to learn and gain insights to prevail over the conditions we are in. Challenges are there to make us grow.

We become stronger and more resilient when we do not give in to our breaking point. The key is how we react to it. If we let it control us, then it could result in more unfavorable situations but if we respond to it then it will boost our lives.

Signs you are at your breaking point

It is important to be aware when you are at your breaking point to decide the best feasible way to overcome situations and save yourself from regretful consequences.

One of the telltale signs you are about to break is mood swings. When stressors pile up and feel you are losing control you often become more irritable. The smallest of things can bother you. This can lead to feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and unmotivated.

Mood swings affect your ability to connect with friends and family. You are easily angered and are less understanding of the people around you. This increases the tension and causes you to detach yourself from others.

Inability to focus properly can likewise mean you are about to snap. You become forgetful and confused about certain things. You cannot concentrate on your work or tasks because of multiple stressors you try to manage.

You can also have trouble sleeping since you often think about the conditions you are in. Lack of sleep further exacerbates other symptoms as you feel more exhausted and have an emotional breakdown.

Moreover, you become more prone to sickness. You have more bouts of common diseases as your immune system gets compromised from lack of sleep and the stress you are experiencing.

You likewise feel hopeless and pessimistic. You constantly perceive that life is a burden and that you have too much to deal with. You often want to give up and care less about yourself. Your defense mechanisms are always in high gear even if there is no impending harm.

Some people resort to addiction just to avoid the negative feelings and overwhelming challenges. They distract themselves and seek pleasure to numb the pain they feel.

All these indications lead to unfavorable results. When you reach your breaking point and explode you act impulsively and do and say things that can harm others as well as yourself.

How to deal with breaking points

As previously mentioned, breaking points are not bad but are opportunities for growth and improvement. These situations can either make or break you. It all depends on how you respond to these challenges. Positive reactions can result in a better and stronger you.

To prevent yourself from tipping over you must first step back and become aware of the situation you are in. Stop and think how you are managing these conditions. Are you responding or reacting?

Do you see these as things happening for you instead of to you? Do you think of them as burdens and moments that put you down or do you take them head on and think of ways to gain from them?

Do you feel anger, frustration, and resentment? Are your emotions clouding your judgement? Why not pause and take a deep breath, acknowledge your thoughts, and look at what you can improve on yourself, what you need to learn to overcome adversities. Life is growth and without challenges how can you develop yourself to be better?

Similarly, analyse the reasons for these difficulties. Are your emotions exaggerating the circumstances you are in? What are the real causes? Are they something within your control or things you cannot control?

Have your procrastination and rumination caused you to underperform at work and made you lose your job? Or has an unforeseen pandemic led to your unemployment? When it is a result of something beyond your control then learn to let go and instead focus your energy on creating solutions for the things that you have power over such as your habits.

If the outcome is a consequence of bad habits like procrastinating, then it is time for change. Stop the habits that are limiting you from living the life you want and start new ones that can help you achieve your goals.

Download the Stop One Start One Habit Tracker app (APPLE, ANDRIOD) to help you stop and form habits. It has helped thousands of people overcome the difficulty of changing habits and move them towards the person they want to become.

Develop the habit of journaling or writing down how you feel and how you manage your stress. Putting your thoughts on paper gives you a clearer perspective and helps you better evaluate and determine what to prioritise. This can also relieve you of the negative feelings you have.

Next, have the habit of reassessing your strategies. Are they propelling you in the right path? Identify the ones that are not working and modify them. Change them to function better and help resolve the challenges.

Exercising and meditating are other habits that you can form to have a calmer and more optimistic perspective. Exercise provides you with the endorphins or feel-good hormones your body and mind need.

On the other hand, meditation relaxes you. Deep breathing exercises during meditation supplies your brain and body with the oxygen to function better. A calm mind allows you to think more rationally.

Have people who support you and your goals. A supportive community can assist you in surpassing your breaking point. Talking to someone you trust about your situation and how you feel can give you different perspectives and relieve you of some of the pressures you feel.

Reach out to others for help. This is sometimes necessary to prevent you from being overwhelmed and boiling over. Asking for help is not a dreadful thing. It is not a sign of weakness but a symbol of your courage to admit there is something you need to learn.

Learn to love and forgive yourself. Accept yourself for who you are, no matter what your flaws are. You are unique and strong. You have the power to overcome your circumstances as you have done many times before.

You have a choice. You can choose to snap, react emotionally and act impulsively which you will regret later, or you can decide to act more rationally, accept the challenge, be more resilient, improve yourself and become the person you want to be.

The choice is yours. Choose wisely. You were meant to grow, so be the change and live the great life you have always wanted.
