How to be a Changemaker

As we gear up for the beginning of a new year, now is the perfect time to think about change and decide who you want to be. There will be more challenges in the days ahead thus the need for more changemakers. Are you willing to be one of them to have a better life? What does it take to be the change?

The changemaker

The dictionary defines changemaker as someone whose role is to bring about change. He is someone who makes a positive difference for the greater good. He has the capacity to be innovative and influence others to support change. These changes can range from social, business, education, technology aspects.

A changemaker can easily adapt to changing situations and see an opportunity for change. He has the desire and persistence to provide solutions to unsolvable problems. He has the courage to take risks towards something better.

Changemakers are not only driven by the desire to make the world a better place, but they are also motivated and determined to act to make change happen. Their goal is to improve the lives of people. They fulfill their dreams and impact the lives of others.

Anyone can be a changemaker, even you.

How to be a changemaker

Know yourself. To bring about change you need to know yourself. Stop and look at where you are. Reflect on your past, present and future. What have you gone through? What challenges have you surpassed? What lessons have you learned? What do you need to improve on?

Who would you be if you knew you would not fail? What impact do you want to make? Think of all the possibilities. Find something in yourself you did not know was there. Do not underestimate what you can do. Be aware that you have choices about who you can be, how you feel and think.

Understand that what got you to where you are right now will not get you to where you want to go. Change needs to start within you so decide on the person you want to be. This is the key that will direct your path and your actions because everything we do is governed by our view of the future.

Once you have a vision of your future self it is then necessary to identify with and have empathy for that person. Building a connection with the person you want to become will help you live and act with intention.

Bring intentions into play. Move forward, act, and be committed to pursuing the person you want to be. Start living each day with the intention of being your future self. Take control of your actions, your feelings, and your thoughts.

Stop habits that limit you from accomplishing your goals. Avoid procrastination and rumination as these keep you in a place you do not want to be. They prevent you from becoming a better person.

Start good habits. Pay attention to your health by considering the magnificent seven or your eating, drinking, exercising, sleeping, speaking, eliminating habits. You can also start meditation to help clear your mind and relax your body. Good health gives you the energy to do what you must and witness the results of your endeavors.

Changing habits can be difficult to do but the Stop One Start One Habit Tracker app makes it simpler. You can download the app on your iPhone or any android phone.  It has helped thousands improve their lives by setting intentions and following through.

Always practice self-control. Stop habit suicide or being a hero in the beginning. To be a changemaker means you need to defy the odds and to keep doing what you need to do despite your negative thoughts and feelings. You need to get momentum to a point you cannot go back.

Invest in yourself. Another key factor to consider is how much investment you make on yourself. You are the highest commodity therefore the best investment you can ever make is in yourself. Devote at least one percent of your day or 14minutes and 24 seconds every day on developing yourself.

Learn new skills or get a coach to guide you. Never stop improving on yourself because that is the point of life – to always be better than your past or present self. Get in the practice of making yourself a more rounded person.

Gaining more knowledge gives you the expertise and confidence you need to take the lead. Moreover, it provides you with more opportunities to instigate change. Be prepared to do it wholeheartedly and to never give up. Take advantage of compounding interests to reap the big rewards after.

Be courageous. Learn to stand up for yourself and speak out. Let your uniqueness shine. You do not have to be what others want you to be. To be a changemaker means you need to be different from the norm.

You need to learn to think creatively and have the courage to show and convey your thoughts while being open to other ideas. Each of us has our own talents and passion. Do not be afraid to pursue what you have been put on this earth to do.

Although it is good to be a follower, sometimes it is best to be the leader. If you want to be a changemaker you must have the courage to direct and start the change you want to happen. Believe in yourself and in your power to lead. You can be anyone you set out to become.

You must also have the courage to be vulnerable. Do not be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Being vulnerable does not mean you are weak; it shows you have the strength to accept your shortcomings and improve on them.

Live with virtue. As previously mentioned, a changemaker contributes to the greater good, it is therefore necessary to live a virtuous life. We must always uphold our moral values as we strive for excellence.

We need to seek what is good and act accordingly. This allows us to achieve our aim of being a changemaker. What benefit would changes bring if we fail to consider the betterment of the people and seek only our own distinction and superiority?

Practice gratitude. Gratitude is a virtue that keeps us grounded. It is important to be thankful for the people that help us accomplish our goals, the opportunities, and challenges we have encountered and surpassed.

Being grateful helps us foster better relationships with others. The connection we have with people makes it easier for us to initiate the change that needs to happen.

Celebrating accomplishments whether it is your own or others is another way to show gratitude. It motivates you and others to continue to devise solutions that can impact the lives of others.

Change mindset. To be a changemaker means you need to have a different view of situations and ideas presented to you. You need to be open to the thoughts and beliefs of others, to different perspectives.

Understand the how and why things work. Learn to discern what works and what does not. Look for solutions that are out of the ordinary and explore all possibilities. Have a more positive outlook in life. Be innovative.

Have a supportive community. Having a supportive group of people can work in two ways. For one you can have people who can guide you and motivate you to be the change you want to be. They can give you different perspectives to help you determine what to change or how to find the best approach to effect the change you want.

Second, a community provides you with the opportunity to inspire others and guide them to be changemakers as well. You can help others see the possibilities by imparting your knowledge. Through this you can have a positive impact on their lives.

We can all have a great future and a better world to live in if we support one another and be the change that we were meant to be.
