21 Nov, 2019The Greatest Story Never Told
Your future is unwritten. I’m known for saying that on a regular basis. But have you ever considered what that really means for you? I
f your future is unwritten it could be anything you want it to be. You can do anything, go anywhere, create anything – all you need to do is take the decision.
Exciting isn’t it? And just a bit scary at the same time.
You see, the moment you realise that you have the ability to create the life you want, a couple of very fundamental questions rise to the surface which you need to answer.
Who am I?
I’ve been pondering this in my podcast this week and it is one of those questions which we can answer at a number of different levels. Most of us first answer the question by saying what we do: I’m an accountant, a parent, an artist, an avid reader. Give it some thought and we may delve into how we live our life – I’m an optimist, a victim, a martyr, a warrior.
When someone asks me that question, though, I answer in a different way.
What are you here to do?
At a fundamental level, all living things are here to grow and to pass on their DNA to the next generation. We are driven to create a legacy and to leave a mark on the world.
These days, however, we get caught up in the every-day life and get comfortable with that, so we don’t ask ourselves what we are really here for. Yet, in knowing what your ultimate purpose is, can give you a life of fulfilment and excitement and allows you to write the future that you really want.
Just image yourself at the end of your life. What do you want people to be saying about you at your funeral? What do you want to have achieved? What is most important to you?
Ponder this for a little while – and accept that it may feel uncomfortable to consider it. It is perfectly okay to feel uncertain about your life’s purpose if you’ve never given it much thought before. One of the ways our mind makes sure we continue to survive for long enough to pass on our DNA is to avoid change – so naturally, it wants to prevent you from going off on some wild adventure to discover yourself.
What’s stopping you?
However well developed your thinking may be into your purpose in life, one thing is sure: there will be obstacles getting in your way as you seek to achieve it.
Some will be external: You may not have the money right now to be able to hand in your notice and start your own business. You might need skills you don’t currently have in order to create the life you want.
Some may relate to the people around you: If you raise the topic of purpose with them, they may challenge your thinking or scoff at you for thinking about it. Or perhaps your life partner doesn’t share your dream and isn’t supportive.
Most, however, will be internal: your relationship with yourself will hold you back. You judge yourself – usually more harshly than anyone else does – and tell yourself things like “Who am I to…?” or “If I do this, I may fail and then…”
At which point, you may decide it is easier to just carry on doing what you’ve been doing in the past. Okay, so your job doesn’t excite you – but it is steady work. Sure, sitting in front of the TV every night feels aimless – but the family will laugh if you sit and meditate. Yes, there is a nagging little voice telling you that there is more to you than this – but it all feels like hard work to make the changes that you really want to make.
So, just suppose, for one moment, I could grant you a wish. Think of me as your good fairy (setting aside the mental image that may have just conjured up). Image that whatever it was you wanted to achieve in life was going to be 100% of a success.
There might be bumps in the road and challenges, of course, but if you had my guarantee that it would all turn out just as you wanted it, what would you do?
What is the story you would create for yourself if you knew you couldn’t fail?
I bet it would be the most amazing story ever told.
