The Magic of thinking and acting BIG – Episode 01 – How to think Big and succeed

Welcome to the first in a series four podcasts on The Magic and Thinking BIG

In today episode we look at how the typical human has around 70,000 thoughts per day and 95% of them are the same thoughts they had yesterday. And your thoughts shape your actions, so it is really important to look at how we are thinking. Otherwise, we are destined to repeat what we are doing and 2020 will be just like 2019 will be just like 2018 will be…. You get the idea.

Over the next four weeks we’ll be looking at how to think and act BIG. I’ve been reading The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz which came out in 1959. Most of his principles are as true to day as they were 60 years ago and, when you add it to other ideas and newer thinking, the results are really powerful and can help to revolutionise your life.

To boldly go….

Have you ever watched Star Trek? At the start of each episode Captain Kirk would describe the mission of the Enterprise: To boldly go where no one has gone before…

Are your plans for 2020 going to boldly take you where no one has gone before?

Probably not. To do that means stepping into the unknown and to get uncomfortable. That’s a scary idea for most of us. But if you always do what you have always done you will always get what you’ve always got. If you are content with that then great.

But let’s face it – you aren’t, are you? You want more.

 “Words to Live By”

“As human beings we have a divided nature — partly physical, but essentially spiritual. We are constantly batted by two conflicting forces.

“One force is the fierce downward thrust of our past conditioning as separate, self-oriented, physical creatures.

“Yet built into our very nature is an inner drive that will not let us be satisfied with a life governed only by biological laws. Some inner evolutionary imperative is constantly exhorting us to grow, to reach for the highest that we can conceive.”

This is a great quotation which I discovered in Eknath Easwaran’s book. Two conflicting forces which either hold us back or take us forward. Which one do you choose?

The force that keeps us were we are, trying to fit in? Sat in our office cubical and not really talking to anyone else for fear of them thinking we are ‘odd’ or questioning what it is that we do?  Doing the same as always despite wishing for something else, in case our friends laugh at our dreams? Hitting snooze so we don’t have to face the day for ten more minutes?

Of the force that drives us forward and makes us unique? That prompts us to take a risk to do something we’ve always dreamed of? Or has us chatting to colleagues and finding out what they do? Getting our of bed each morning full of excitement for the day ahead.

Think differently to think big

So how do you think big? How do you choose the forward momentum rather than the safety zone?

Start by think about what you want.

  • I want to be healthy
  • I want to be happy
  • I want my own business

And then, be like Shakespeare. Create that scene in your mind. What would that look like? what would be different? how would you feel? Create a picture so vivid and clear that you can feel it. And do it every day so it takes you forward. Be the playwright, the actor and the director and let’s make this year an unbelievable year.
